Our Choir

One aspect of the group is a contemporary choir.  This chorus has been as large as thirty and as small as five and has toured nationally.  Vocal works are included in every concert as are plays, video/film, poetry and performance.

History

Since its debut in 1990, eXindigo! has presented concerts featuring vocal and instrumental chamber music of living composers. Concerts often include art created in other media such as poetry, film and stage works. The pieces come together as an eclectic, challenging and entertaining whole.

eXindigo!

provides local artists to opportunity to perform and compose new works in a professional environment. Over 60 professional musicians have performed the works of over 25 composers and artists. Of the works performed, many are United States and world premieres.

An integral part of eXindigo! is vocal works. A 12 to 16 voice professional choir was formed that has been featured at the Long Beach Museum of Art’s August 1991 music/video festival as the "Special Event" in the world premier of a piece written especially for the choir. In March, 1992, the choir performed an all-contemporary concert at the invitation-only American Choral Director’s Association’s Western Division Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.

eXindigo!

has received grants from the City of Los Angeles, Toyota and Arco. A grant from the City of Los Angeles allowed the commission of three new works for the group. The commissions were awarded to under-represented composers.

Women composers have been prominently featured in concerts as well as composers and performers from various ethnic backgrounds.

eXindigo!

has received the attention of the press with articles in the Los Angeles Times and South Bay Daily Breeze, concert reviews, listings in the "Best of the Weekend" in the LA Times Friday editions and Sunday Calendar’s "Highlights of the Coming Week." eXindigo! has been on PBS radio, KUSC, KPFK, and more than 100 stations carrying "The First Art" radio program.

eXindigo!

moved to the Central Coast in 1993 and initially tried to establish a group of performers but met with little success. The effort was tried again in the Summer of 1997 with success.

Now, eXindigo! is working in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Art Center (SLOAC) to present contemporary concerts. After a debut concert at SLOAC on Friday, June 13, 1997, auditions were held and an official group formed. The new ensemble, features David Sears, Percussion; Judy Philbin, Vocalist; Elaine Gullotta, vocalist; and Ted Peterson, Guitar. As the group performs and expands, the sound will change so that every eXindigo! concert will be a unique event.

In future concerts, eXindigo! and SLOAC plan to present touring artists, local performers, performance artists and theater artists. Dates have been booked through March of 1998 with tentative dates set beyond.
